David Avery
is a San Francisco–based printmaker who has spent more than 30 years creating meticulously detailed black-and-white etchings infused with dark humor and sharp social commentary. Originally trained as a classical musician, he discovered etching by chance and became a self-taught master, drawing on Old Master techniques to satirize contemporary politics and culture. Committed to the expressive power of monochrome, Avery explores psychological depth through imagery that blends myth, history, and modern absurdity. His work is held in major public collections including the Library of Congress, the Fogg Museum at Harvard, the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Stanford University, and the New York Public Library.
